Machine Learning Reading Program
University of Washington, Seattle
What Is MLRP?
The Machine Learning Reading Program (MLRP) is a student-run initiative at the University of Washington that connects undergraduates with graduate and postdoctoral mentors to read and discuss machine learning research papers.
How Does It Work?
Undergraduates are paired with a graduate or postdoctoral mentor to read and discuss approximately eight machine learning-related research papers over the course of a quarter.
Research papers are selected collaboratively by mentors and mentees. Pairs meet weekly at a flexible, mutually agreed-upon time throughout the quarter.
At the end of the quarter, undergraduates give a short presentation on one or more of their favorite papers.
Who Should Apply?
The program is open to all undergraduates, regardless of major. Students from any academic or personal background are welcome, as long as they bring curiosity about machine learning.
Even if you're not interested in pure machine learning, you are still encouraged to apply. We aim to have mentors across a wide range of fields, from robotics to natural language processing, AI for science, and more.
While some familiarity with calculus, linear algebra, and probability may be helpful, there are no formal prerequisites for participating in the program.
The program may be especially useful for students who are considering graduate school or a career in research.
